Simplifying the Egg Donation Process
Using a donor egg is an excellent option for women who want to conceive but have trouble producing healthy eggs on their own. Women who typically use an egg donor are unable to produce healthy eggs due to age, genetic disease carrier status, diminished ovarian function, premature ovarian failure, or history of cancer treatment. The donor egg program at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York uses both agency and known donors. There is no wait for a donor. All donors are personally screened by NYU Langone RSofNY to ensure only the best candidates are a part of our database.
Egg Donation for Recipients
Our doctors at NYU Langone RSofNY can help you decide if using an egg donor is the right choice for you. Should you decide that you want to go with an egg donor, you will choose either a “known donor” or “anonymous donor”. Known donors are someone who is known but not sexually intimate with the recipient so they must still go through the same rigorous screening process as anonymous donors. Same-sex female partners may sometimes opt to transfer one woman’s eggs to her partner once they have been fertilized with a donor sperm. Anonymous donors are typically obtained through a donor agency. Recipients will receive a comprehensive profile on the donor along with photos. Names and identifying information will always be kept anonymous to protect the donor’s identity.
Donor-Egg IVF actually has the highest success rate of any fertility treatment, at a national success rate of over 52% and over 70% at our specialized center. The actual process of using a donor egg is very similar to IVF (in vitro fertilization). The recipient will go through hormonal treatment to prepare for the fertilized egg and to have her cycle synchronized with her egg donor’s cycle. The eggs will then be retrieved from the donor and fertilized with the sperm in our state-of-the-art laboratory in order to create the embryos. Five days later, the embryo is transferred into the recipient’s uterus under ultrasound guidance.
Egg Donor Program for Donor Egg Recipients
Using an egg donor is a big decision and deserves time to ensure it is the right choice for you. It is important to note that when working with NYU Langone RSofNY, all of our donors are thoroughly screened utilizing the FDA guidelines and New York State regulations along with our own advanced testing. We ensure that donors are being screened both mentally and physically and counsel them so they understand that the eggs are no longer theirs following the retrieval.
